About the timber

Originally a very hard, strong and high density timber, the species in India has been cloned with Eucalyptus and made softer. Thus achieving a balanced timber just between a very hard and a very soft wood, making the timber a moderately hard wood that is well sustained.

Application

  • Generally used for short length frames and shutters for windows and doors.
  • Also, very popular with local furniture makers as it highly resembles Teak wood.

Teak

About the timber

Teak  is a tropical hardwood tree species in the family Lamiaceae. It is a large, deciduous tree that occurs in mixed hardwood forests. Teak wood has a leather-like smell when it is freshly milled and is particularly valued for its durability and water resistance.

Application

  • The wood is used for boat building, exterior construction, veneer, furniture, carving, turnings, and other small wood projects.

Jack

About the timber

The golden yellow timber with good grain is used for building furniture and house construction in India. It is termite-resistant and is superior to teak for building furniture.

Application

  • Jack wood is widely used in the manufacture of furniture, doors and windows, in roof construction and fish sauce barrels.

About the timber

It is the best known economic timber species of the rosewood genus sold internationally, but it is also used as fuel wood and for shade and shelter.
and it is easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Also has excellent finishing qualities.

Application

  • joinery, flooring, railway sleepers, harbor and dock work, turnings, construction and bridges. It is also used in boat building and marine construction.

Purple Heart

About the timber

Purpleheart presents a number of challenges in the woodshop. Its hard-to-detect interlocking grain makes hand-planning, chiseling and working with carving tools a challenge. However, woodturners can note that with sharp tools, it turns clean, and sands well.

Application

  • Purpleheart is prized for use in fine inlay work especially on musical instruments, woodturning, cabinetry, flooring, and furniture. The timber is also valuable in applications that require toughness, such as truck decking.

About the timber

Greenheart is rated as very durable, and is also resistant to most insect attacks. It’s also considered to be one of the best-suited woods for use in marine environments, and has good weathering characteristics.

Application

  • Boatbuilding, docks, decking, posts, fishing rods, pool cues, and other turned wood items.

Saal wood

About the timber

Sal is one of the most important sources of hardwood timber in India, with hard, coarse-grained wood that is light in color when freshly cut, but becomes dark brown with exposure. The wood is resinous and durable, and is sought-after for construction, although not well suited to planning and polishing

Application

  • This wood is especially suitable for constructing frames for doors and windows.

In its native India and Southeast Asia, champaca is logged for its valuable timber. It has a finely textured, dark brown and olive-colored wood

Neelgiri (eucalyptus )

About the timber

The trees can reach heights of up to 60 meters. A characteristic feature is its silver-grey, warty bark and twisted trunk.

Kwila is a high quality, strong and durable hardwood.  The wood is hard and heavy, the texture moderately coarse but even, and the grain may be straight or interlocked but is often wavy.

  • It is used for Landscaping & heavy construction, flooring, decking, exterior joinery & construction, interior joinery & furniture and mouldings.
